NUT members at Haggerston School in Hackney, east London, will be on strike on Thursday 9th July.
Last week the head teacher and governors confirmed that they plan to make six teachers redundant.
The redundancies follow a plan to reorganise the management structure of the school announced just days before half term.
The headteacher claims the redundancies are necessary due to a fall in roll and problems with the school’s budget. Her financial worries did not, however, stop her from sending the Deputy Head off in a cab from Hackney to Tottenham with redundancy letters last Thursday 2nd July.
Haggerston teachers – apart from the Head teacher who remained in school – were working hard to make sure that pupils enjoyed their annual Sports Day in a sports ground in Tottenham. Mid-morning the Deputy turned up with letters for the individuals involved confirming the redundancies.
These letters were handed out, literally in front of the whole school, whilst the teachers concerned were attempting to run the events of Sports Day.
NUT members at Haggerston have voted by 36 votes to 1 in favour of discontinuous strike action to fight the redundancies. The turnout in the ballot was an amazing 100%. The members are prepared to strike this term and next. Support the strike on Thursday.
