Anniversaries

The archive keeps marking dates — the Nakba at sixty, the Easter Rising at a hundred, Grunwick at forty. They are gathered here by the last digit of the year the event happened, because that is the digit its round anniversaries fall on: the Easter Rising of 1916 comes round in 2016 and 2026, Guernica in 1937 comes round in 2027. Read down a single column and you have the dates that fall due together, in calendar order.

An article almost never names the year it looks back to. It says “sixty years since” and leaves the reader to subtract, so the year here is worked out — the year the piece was published, less the interval it names. Every date below has then been checked against an outside source, and where the piece's own arithmetic was loose the event's real date is used: one article marking “75 years since the Tennessee monkey trial” was eighty years after it.
