WELCOME! Bienvenue!

Socialist Resistance Rouge- ESF Special  |  page 2-3

This is scanned newsprint, not web text. The original PDFs carried no text layer at all, so every word here was read off the page by OCR. Expect dropped opening letters, run-together words and wrong characters. There was no contents page to cut the paper up by, so the articles were found from the size of their headlines: a headline may carry its kicker, and where an article ran beside a boxed panel a few lines of the neighbour can appear. The scanned issue is the authority; this text is here so the words can be found at all.

WELCOME to this special edition of Socialist Resistance produced for the European Social

Forum in collaboration with

Rouge, our sister paper in

Socialist Resistance is

monthly paper whose supporters are involved in Respect and

in the Scottish Socialist Party.

We are active trade unionists,

and participate in many social

movements - in particular in

anti-racist activity, Palestine

solidarity and in support of

abortion rights, as well as the

anti-war movement.

We have been involved in

building this social forum, and

those in Florence and Paris

before it, and in the World

Social Forums in Porto Alegre

and Mumbai.

We think these social forums

provide an excellent opportunity for all those who think that

"another world is possible" to

debate what sort of alternative

we want, and how to achieve it.

We think that the attacks

facing working people across

the globe today, whether as a result of war and occupation, privatisation or speed up or climate change cannot and will

not be ended by simply reforming the existing system. We need revolutionary change.

The different world we fight for is a socialist world - one in which the rule of profit is eliminated and things are produced on the basis of social need in an ecologically sustainable way.

This needs a different form of democracy, in which people were elected where they work or live to argue and vote in accordance with the proposals debated by that group, but BIENVENIDOS a esta edición especial de Socialist Resistance producido para el Foro Social Europeo en colaboracion con Rouge, nuestro perlódico hermano en Francia.

would be recalled instantly if

they did not follow that mandate. This is our democracy,

not theirs.

We think that in order to

bring about such a transformation, we need powerful instruments at our disposal.

For millions of people, politics has become a dirty word as

social democracy, which always

organised to block revolutionary change and fought imperialist wars, in the era of

neo-liberal capitalism does not

even deliver the most basic

reforms.

But the history of struggles

against oppression over the

centuries also shows that even

the greatest mass movements

are not able to achieve real and

lasting change without a political party that is an integral part

of that movement and articulates its demands in an ongoing

way.

Look at the situation in

Argentina, for example. The movement was strong enough to bring down four presidents within thee weeks in 2003.

But because there was no national political alternative, the mass movement dissipated and the issues that brought people onto the streets and impelled them to organise in the barrios remain unsolved.

Having such a party is not a guarantee of success as we can see from the unfortunate example of the Brazilian Workers Party. Lula in government has not been a voice for the working people who elected him, but has rather acted as the mouthpiece for the IMF and the World Bank.

That is why we don't just Sociales Mundiales de Porto Alegre y Mumbai.

seek to build broad anti-capitalist parties, but also insist on

the right of different political

currents to organise within them and put forward their own ideas.

The ideas put forward in this editorial are developed at more length in this copy of Socialist Resistance/Rouge.

On page 21 you will find details of how to contact papers and magazines published in other European countries that have similar ideas. las necesidades sociales y de una forma ecológicamente sostenible.

notre journal

Socialist Resistance est un

journal mensuel dont les soutiens

sont membres de Respect et du

SSP (Partis Socialiste Ecossais).

devons disposer d'outils puissants.
