STOP EWAR DON'T ATTACK IRAQ PALESTINE

Socialist Resistance pilot issue October 2002  |  page 1-2

This is scanned newsprint, not web text. The original PDFs carried no text layer at all, so every word here was read off the page by OCR. Expect dropped opening letters, run-together words and wrong characters. There was no contents page to cut the paper up by, so the articles were found from the size of their headlines: a headline may carry its kicker, and where an article ran beside a boxed panel a few lines of the neighbour can appear. The scanned issue is the authority; this text is here so the words can be found at all.

September 28. Tens of thousands of people are S marching through London in one of the largest

demonstrations ever to take place in this country. The march travels under two slogans: Don't Attack Iraq' and "Freedom for Palestine'. This campaign against Bush and Blair's "War on Terror' has been built through hundreds of meetings and rallies organised throughout the country.

Eleven national trade unions have sponsored the march and the campaign: Unison, Aslef, TSSA, RMT, NUJ, CWU, among others. The amendment from the TSSA to the main anti-war resolution at the recent TUC conference opposing war under any circumstances was only narrowly defeated. It carried the day on the conference floor and was only rejected after a card vote.

General secretaries from five national unions will address the rally in Hyde Park. Support has come from socialist and peace groups; from CND, Plaid Cymru, the Green Party and dozens of other national organisations. The mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, will address the marchers.

Over 165 members of parliament have signed Alice Mahon's early day motion opposing the war. The Muslim community is at the heart of the campaign.

Blair has been forced to recall parliament because of the pressure within his own party. In the run up to Labour Party conference, a real groundswell of anger against this war is Andrew Burgin proceeds ing right think Iraq would be the final US target
