LOW PAY NO WAY

Socialist Resistance pilot issue October 2002  |  page 23

This is scanned newsprint, not web text. The original PDFs carried no text layer at all, so every word here was read off the page by OCR. Expect dropped opening letters, run-together words and wrong characters. There was no contents page to cut the paper up by, so the articles were found from the size of their headlines: a headline may carry its kicker, and where an article ran beside a boxed panel a few lines of the neighbour can appear. The scanned issue is the authority; this text is here so the words can be found at all.

United Left, is campaigning on a number of principles for the future functioning of the political funds. It calls for the two political funds to be replaced by a single fund accountable to the union as a whole, and for all members to be able to play a role within it. it argues for UNISON to maintain affiliation to the Labour Party, but not to make additional donations unless these are in the interest of the union. demands that support for a Labour Party constituency be given only if the MP, councillors and candidates agree with UNISON's core policies.

The United Left is pressing as well for the funds at a Scottish national level to be devolved and in general for decentralising part of the funds to allow members to decide who to support in particular elections. This would make possible support for candidates who are not members of the Labour Party but who are in agreement with the UNISON's core policies.

Political alternatives to the left of Labour are growing, particularly in Scotland with the Scottish Socialist Party, but also in parts of England with the Socialist Alliance and independent candidates.

Other unions like the RMT have withdrawn their support to MPs - including ministers who support privatisation of the rail and tube. Now is the time for the unions to ensure that their political representation is consistent with the defence of their members' interests.
