Zionists step up attacks to gag Palestine critics

This is scanned newsprint, not web text. The original PDFs carried no text layer at all, so every word here was read off the page by OCR. Expect dropped opening letters, run-together words and wrong characters. There was no contents page to cut the paper up by, so the articles were found from the size of their headlines: a headline may carry its kicker, and where an article ran beside a boxed panel a few lines of the neighbour can appear. The scanned issue is the authority; this text is here so the words can be found at all.

HE KILLING of Palestinian journalApril 19 is another sinister development in the chronicle of increasing Israeli repression against those opposing their criminal occupation Palestine. Darwazeh's cameraman, Hassan alTiti, described what happened; "a soldier got out of an armoured car, we shouted at him in Hebrew that we were journalists."

They both shouted but the soldier fired a single shot into the group. As experienced journalists they had carefully positioned themselves, so that they were not between the soldiers and stone throwers. They were wearing bright yellow vests marked "Press".

Palestinian reporters are a particular thorn in the side of the Israeli forces, because they are based in, and reporting from the West Bank and Gaza.

The western reporters are "embedded' in West Jerusalem and rely upon the Israeli state for reports or permission to go and film, as they did the attack on Arafat's headquarters.

Nazeh's death followed the month long offensive against International Solidarity Movement activists, members of a non-violent movement, that helps bring news about the oppression of the Palestinians. They try to stop the demolition of homes, help people through checkpoints, travel with ambulances and so on. of Since the beginning of the war on

On March 16, Rachel Corrie, a 23-year-old student from Olympia, Washington, was murdered when an Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) bulldozer crushed her. She was wearing a fluorescent jacket, and according to all eyewitnesses, was clearly visible to the driver. These eyewitnesses also shouted to the driver. Rachel was the first ISM person killed in 30 months of activities

• The ensuing enquiry, conducted by the IDF itself, has not surprisingly cleared the driver. A number of American Senators have signed up to a motion calling for a US enquiry.

• At the beginning of April, Brian Avery, a Canadian ISMer was shot in the face by an IDF sniper. Again he was clearly visible in the same jacket that all ISMers now wear.
