Resolution to Socialist Alliance AGM

Socialist Resistance no6  |  page 7-8

This is scanned newsprint, not web text. The original PDFs carried no text layer at all, so every word here was read off the page by OCR. Expect dropped opening letters, run-together words and wrong characters. There was no contents page to cut the paper up by, so the articles were found from the size of their headlines: a headline may carry its kicker, and where an article ran beside a boxed panel a few lines of the neighbour can appear. The scanned issue is the authority; this text is here so the words can be found at all.

launch. A new left coalition needs to be separate to the StW, but comprising as much of its socialist component as possible.

These developments around the ] war come on top of a stution

already radicalised by a rise in trade union struggle, including strikes on the railways and the resistance of the firefighters to a rotten deal. The election of the 'awkward squad' of new leaders, itself a result of a rise in activism, has had a positive effect on the trade union movement both in terms of strengthening the fightback on immediate issues and on developing the political debate around the question of the crisis of working-class representation.

The task that is posed for the Socialist Alliance, and the left more generally, is the creation of a new broad coalition of socialist as a result of the war and those likely to do so in the future, given that opposition to the war has now been contained by the leadership.

Such a radical coalition of left forces can create a new level of unity and a much more effective left alternative to Blairism. The success of the SSP in Scotland can give it support and direction.

The AGM agenda should therefore comprise three elements: addressing the new political situation after the war and launching an appeal for a new socialist coalition; adopting clear projects which can build the Alliance in the meantime and dealing with constitutional matters and the election of a new executive.
