SSP's position on Palestine

Socialist Resistance no5  |  page 23

This is scanned newsprint, not web text. The original PDFs carried no text layer at all, so every word here was read off the page by OCR. Expect dropped opening letters, run-together words and wrong characters. There was no contents page to cut the paper up by, so the articles were found from the size of their headlines: a headline may carry its kicker, and where an article ran beside a boxed panel a few lines of the neighbour can appear. The scanned issue is the authority; this text is here so the words can be found at all.

After a month the total stands at €819.50, more than a quarter of the way towards our L3,000 target.

With pressure on our meagre resources to help build campaigning work around the country, we urgently need to raise the full sum.

That will ensure that we have I was happy to see Socialist Resistance cover the recent SSP conference so positively. However I felt your review of our new position on Palestine to be very limited. Simply saying 'the SSP adopted a position on a two-state solution' misrepresents not only the motion but also the debate we had.

As the author of the successful motion, I hope to fully explain its background. I and other SSP members had grown weary of the polarised one state/two state debate. It seemed to me that the left was caught up in a very narrow and limited discussion.

The motion supports the aims of the Palestinian intifada (Palestine state in West Bank/Gaza Strip, return of refugees, Israeli troop withdrawal, dismantling of settlements) but looks towards a secular, democratic and socialist Palestinian state in its pre1948 borders.

We made it clear that reactionary fundamentalism, zionism and capitalist forces need to be challenged for this to happen.

We also challenged the role of an SSP type party in terms of Palestine. Rather than preach dogmatic formulas from afar we argued our role was of practical solidarity and raising awareWe should think about the Palestinians' day to day struggle as well as long term solutions.

Other than that, keep up the good work.
