As this issue of Socialist Resistance went to press, news broke of the state of emergency in Pakistan, with over 500 arrests and brutal police attacks on protests by lawyers. Farooq Tariq is currently in hiding. The article was clearly written at an earlier stage of the crisis Fighting on: continue to clampdown on civil rights ditions to us and to shut us up. We must have a right to organize and demonstrate without fear of these suicidal attacks.
The state has failed to protect even those who compromised with the regime: how it can protect those of us who are totally against the military regime? The only defence is self defence and unity among ourselves, the only way to fight is solidarity at national and international basis.
At present there are many process of Left unity going on in Pakistan. There is Awami Jamhoori Tehreek, an alliance of seven Left groups and parties. But it in the conference.
