LOWER CHANGE LATE CHAND

Socialist Resistance no49  |  page 19-20

This is scanned newsprint, not web text. The original PDFs carried no text layer at all, so every word here was read off the page by OCR. Expect dropped opening letters, run-together words and wrong characters. There was no contents page to cut the paper up by, so the articles were found from the size of their headlines: a headline may carry its kicker, and where an article ran beside a boxed panel a few lines of the neighbour can appear. The scanned issue is the authority; this text is here so the words can be found at all.

agreed on a lot, we disagreed on nuclear power. Coal is another problem area.

However, its only by working with trade unions that such dilemmas can be addressed. In an ecosocialist society, there may be less formal work but as one wag once put it if work was that good the rich would have kept it all for themselves. The solution of course is to redistribute wealth, share work and for all of us to work less!

Conversion is also absolutely vital, why produce cars when you can make eco friendly buses. Why make fighter jets when you can make wind turbines, we all know that compared to a reindustrialised Britain, manufacturing would have to expand to tackle climate change and other ecological ills.

The late great Judi Bari of Earth First!, worked with the logging unions in California who recognised that clear cutting of ancient trees was unsustainable and would It is the working people who have their hands on the machinery. And only by stopping the machinery of destruction can we ever hope to ultimately costs jobs. She argued "A revolutionary ecology movement should also organize among poor and working people. For it is the working people who have their hands on the machinery. And only by stopping the machinery of destruction can we ever hope to stop this madness'. from http://www.greens.org/sr/43/43-16.html

Environmental issues are work place issues because pollution in the work place damages workers first. Think of all the work place deaths from asbestos and an array of dangerous chemicals. There is an interesting article from the US green newsletter Synthesis/Regneration, which argues that green trade unionism must become a priority and must in turn be based on shop floor participation and democratic reform. In it Dan Jakopovich

"It is important to recognize the central importance of class and the revolutionary implications of class struggle at the point of production. People are in their materially most powerful role as producers of goods and services, capable of withholding labor, and also democratically taking over the means of production and distribution.

"It is the material conditions of life which restrict and deform peoples' humanity; therefore the struggle against those conditions also has to be concrete" http://www.greens.org/sr/43/43-16.html

Green consumerism is certainly not enough to save the planet, practical action for real change must make trade mon aculon a grealer prioril than it has for the green movement, a start will be for ecosocialists to work towards a successful trade climate conference and to support action for a Trade Union Freedom bill
