A mass climate demonstration is planned in London for December 8th at the time of the UN Climate Talks in Bali, Indonesia.
Demonstrators Dec.8. will target the UK government for reneging on its pledge to source 20 per cent of electricity from renewables by 2020, and undermining the whole European effort to tackle
Recent leaked documents have suggested the government is planning a Uturn on climate policy by explicitly abandoning this pledge made by Tony Blair alongside other European leaders.
The protestors will also
target the Bush administration in the US for continuing to block progress at the crucial in Bali. The demonstration will be one of many taking place on the same day as
part of a Global Day of Climate protest.
Last year 25-30,000 people gathered in Trafalgar Square during the Nairobi climate talks. This was part of an international Day of Action which involved more than 30 countries, with 90,000 demonstrating in Australia and thousands in France, Bolivia, the USA, Kenya and other places.
Unfortunately the umbrella organisation Stop Climate year's demonstration in London - and particularly to the large turn out of young people - is not formally backing this year's action.
The campaign against climate change is obviously trying to reach out to the membership of the constituent organisations such as Friends of the Earth, but lack of human and financial resources makes
Phil Thornhill from the Campaign against Climate Change said "What chance have we against what many see as the greatest threat humanity has ever faced if the government gives up at the slightest hint of "practical difficulties".
A government minister recently rated obesity as a threat on the same level as climate change - this shows
reductions by 2050.
