This is scanned newsprint, not web text. The original PDFs carried no text layer at all, so every word here was read off the page by OCR. Expect dropped opening letters, run-together words and wrong characters. There was no contents page to cut the paper up by, so the articles were found from the size of their headlines: a headline may carry its kicker, and where an article ran beside a boxed panel a few lines of the neighbour can appear. The scanned issue is the authority; this text is here so the words can be found at all.

Hugo Chávez's recent visit to London gave a glimpse of the interest in Latin America on the left in Britain.

There is a solidarity organisation for almost every country in the continent. The Cuba Solidarity Campaign, Bolivia Solidarity Campaign, Columbia Solidarity, and two campaigns for Venezuela.

So the time seems ripe for trying to pull together both the people and the ideas to enrich the discussion and expand the networks involved in this activity.

Activists in East London from a range of organisations, including Socialist Resistance, have begun organising a series of meetings on current events in Latin America.

The first of these, on October 10 features Jeremy Dear and Jeremy Corbyn talking Recent picket of Mexican embrassy about the TUC delegation to Venezuela and the mass protests in Mexico. The venue is a community centre used by several Latin American organisations, Praxis in Pott Street. meetings.

In November John Mc Donnell and George Galloway will be discussing the significance of the Cuban and Venezuelan revolutions In December there will be a report back from the Venezuelan and Brazilian elections and Tariq Ali will survey the region in January's meeting.

The revolutionary processes unfolding in Latin America have done more than excite and enthuse socialists.

They have put talk of socialism, social control of industry, seizing power from the ruling class back on the agenda in a very real way. With the launch of this series of meetings we intend to bring these ideas into the British labour movement. CONTACT [email protected] for details of the events and the planning for them. . The theft of votes and dropping people of the electoral register were staggering. The election was won by 243 000 votes but 940 000 votes were not counted.
