ASLEF sells out on South West Trains

Socialist Resistance no39  |  page 2

This is scanned newsprint, not web text. The original PDFs carried no text layer at all, so every word here was read off the page by OCR. Expect dropped opening letters, run-together words and wrong characters. There was no contents page to cut the paper up by, so the articles were found from the size of their headlines: a headline may carry its kicker, and where an article ran beside a boxed panel a few lines of the neighbour can appear. The scanned issue is the authority; this text is here so the words can be found at all.

The US Senate voted 80-19 in late September to approve a border fence between the United States and Mexico. Both capitalist parties voted overwhelmingly in favour of the legislation including Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton.

Mexican officials have claimed that this will have a negative affect on relations between the two nations with foreign minister Luis Ernesto Derbez stating that Mexican migrants were "not terrorists".

Also in late September, the US Senate voted 65-34 to back legislation supporting "special tribunals" to try foreign terror eight hours before being expelled by riot police. Budapest,

Angry scenes outside the Hungarian Parliament after their PM was outed as a serial liar United States, Chavez announced during his trip to Last month we reported on train drivers striking at South West Trains. A SWT striker reports further:

After a successful company wide strike had stopped most services at the end of August, drivers on SWT were preparing to hurt the company with further days out and a successful conclusion to our campaign.

Instead ASLEF has managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. We have been left scratching our heads trying to work out what we have gained.

The ASLEF leadership agreed to call off the dispute after SWT promised to accept the decision of a joint reference to the High Court to determine tax liabilities -as if they could have ignored the decision in any case.

The company also agreed to stand by a previous agreement to only use managers to drive trains in an emergency. But as they are standing by their interpretation of the agreement as allowing the managers to act as scabs, such an agreement is meaningless.

The only real concession SWT appear to have made is to allow local reps one more day off work each week to consult their members. For many drivers, angry with ASLEF for failing to progress our demands whatsoever this looks like a clumsy bribe.
