low wages that is making most people in Britain's lives a misery.
Of course whatever tactic we adopt, the government will hunt down as many migrants as possible and continue to frighten, brutalise and deport them, but at least if we can build a powerful alliance the Home Office will be forced to concede on more cases and maybe on more legislative measures.
And in the present climate, the idea that large numbers of migrants can continue to live underground for years into the future is unrealistic - all the signs are that more resources for enforcement, combined with the gradual introduction of biometric ID cards, and a society in which
are increasingly incited to inform on each other, will mean that living underground will not be a longterm option, and that a wide movement in defence of migrants will be the best form of defence.
Concretely people who wish to build this initiative need temselves to attend and encourage others to attend the Migrants' Rights Network conference being facilitated by JCWI Monday November 6, and where possible put resolutions to this effect in Respect branches, trade union branches, and start having the debate with people about how the situation can be turned round. • Further information on the Migrants' Rights Conference is available from Don Flynn [email protected]. • See Resistance website for CDAS model TU resolution or contact [email protected] / SR office for resolution for Respect.
