Members of the Southern Oil Workers Union in Basra held a general strike on 22 August which succeeded in temporarily suspending all pumping from the city's ports. The strike, held after months of fightback, made a number of demands on employers including such basic rights as being paid on time, being paid for overtime and the provision of ambulances so that sick workers could be transported to the hospital if necessary. aid workers were found murdered in their oftices in Mutur.
