This is scanned newsprint, not web text. The original PDFs carried no text layer at all, so every word here was read off the page by OCR. Expect dropped opening letters, run-together words and wrong characters. There was no contents page to cut the paper up by, so the articles were found from the size of their headlines: a headline may carry its kicker, and where an article ran beside a boxed panel a few lines of the neighbour can appear. The scanned issue is the authority; this text is here so the words can be found at all.

donation of E... Phone Address email • The Green Party has the best policies on trade unions ... at least according to Oxford councillor Matt Sellwood, speaking at the Green Trade Union Group's Conference recently.

In comparison with the Lib Dems, Tories and New Labour he may even be right: but what does it actually represent?

The other speakers at the event were Martin Wicks from Swindon Trades Council and Rob Hancock from SE region TUC, who dashed off to watch the football.

He got a lot of stick for the TUC's (mis)handling of the Union Learning agenda, but he agreed to continue the debate. The government is throwing lots of money at us for union Learning reps, who have similar rights to workplace Health and Safety reps.

The TUC's organising academy could do more than train ULRs: it could begin to encourage self-organisation rather than vague talk about "work/life balance".

Martin Wicks spoke of the GMB's campaign to protect national bargaining rights at ASDA/Wallmart, concentrating on links with "green issues", ana was invitea to organise a fringe meeting for Solidarity, the trade union magazine, at Green party conference.

/Mobile Council which allowed me to speak officially. We appear to be following the TUC line of not supporting any political party.

I focused on the cultural and democratic changes needed in the trade union movement (and Green Party!) and mentioned the need for a trade unionwasea workers party.

There was an interesting discussion around the lecturers' dispute and the marketisation of education, after Cir Sellwood reminded us that recently an Oxford City UNISON picket line was crossed by Labour Group leader Bob Price, wilo was denina te autempled lock-out of lecturers at Oxford Brookes University.

Matt Sellwood is also convenor of Green Lett, which is primarily an internal pressure group aiming to push the Green Party towards trade union issues.

It also has an ecosocialist platform tracing its roots back to William Morris.

Next year's Green Trade Union conference will be in London, and organised by their national executive: but unlike the Respect Trade Union conference, it will only be open to Green party members.

Nevertheless it may be time we began to take the "Green Left" a but more seriously.
