Support Kurdish and Turkish asylum seekers

Socialist Resistance no35  |  page 15-16

This is scanned newsprint, not web text. The original PDFs carried no text layer at all, so every word here was read off the page by OCR. Expect dropped opening letters, run-together words and wrong characters. There was no contents page to cut the paper up by, so the articles were found from the size of their headlines: a headline may carry its kicker, and where an article ran beside a boxed panel a few lines of the neighbour can appear. The scanned issue is the authority; this text is here so the words can be found at all.

Britain tries to maintain the fiction, as it does with other countries, that human rights conditions in Turkey are not too bad, and that the individuals it wishes to deport would not themselves encounter problems.

In the last year hundreds of people have been removed to Turkey. The communities are under great pressure, as many people never succeeded in getting political asylum here, and since the removals increased, they are living in increasing fear of detention and removal.

In the last month there have been several protests and hunger strikes in British detention centres, including one hunger strike of Turkish and Kurdish people, and two community centres in London have just announced a campaign around these issues.

This is very welcome, as such community campaigning will be vital to attempts to resist the regime of increased detention and speedier removal now being brought in along with increased criminalisation of all refugee communities and more tagging (the introduction of "domestic detention centres"), in a move which increases the convergence of the methods by which "terroris! suspects" are dealt with under terrorism powers and asylum seekers are dealt with under immigration powers.
