Socialist Resistance believes that Respect is the most important thing to have happened on the left in England for a very long time. Respect came out of the anti-war movement and was founded on socialist principles. Labour is now the party of war and privatisation. New Labour has lost tens of thousands of members and hundreds of thousands of people are not able to vote for it any more. Millions more only vote for it because they hate the Tories more. Respect is less than two years old but it won a quarter of a million votes in the European elections, and had an MP elected in the first general election it contested. The council elections in May are Respect's next big challenge.
Candidates will be standing in many parts of the country, and in Tower Hamlets and Newham they will contesting virtually every seat.
