This is scanned newsprint, not web text. The original PDFs carried no text layer at all, so every word here was read off the page by OCR. Expect dropped opening letters, run-together words and wrong characters. There was no contents page to cut the paper up by, so the articles were found from the size of their headlines: a headline may carry its kicker, and where an article ran beside a boxed panel a few lines of the neighbour can appear. The scanned issue is the authority; this text is here so the words can be found at all.

hirac many yeas have been fighting, have been resisting, the "No" carries the hope of another world, of another Europe, of another politics.

Thousands of debates, hunAs we go to press, it is not clear whether the ratification process of the European constitution will continue, following the death blows dealt to it by the referendum results in France and the Netheriands.

The formal decision will be taken at a European summit later this month.

What is certainly clear is that the strength of left-wing "no" volcas In both countles gives the lie to the myth that the project of European Integration, despite deepening militarism and neo-liberalism Is something that all progrossives should champion

Indeed, not only are those results a defeat for Jacques Chirac and the right wing coalition In the Netherlands. but they are perhaps ever more a blow against those In the leadership of Europe's Socal Democratic and Green

parties who, along with their

lackeys in the trade unions

sought to convince their supporters that more austerity

should be tolerated.

It sooms that now there wlll

be no referendum here In

Britaln.

Opinion polls in Britaln

have always shown a majority

opposed to the single currency and greater EU Integration, but it would have been

harder to make a clear loit

volce rise above the tirade of

nationalist rejection of the

treaty. The lesson from our

comrades in other countries

shows that this can and mas!

be done.

As the Ligue Communiste onaire statements on pages make clear, the against attacks on worknot rest with its on the rights In

Stren gthened by our recer
