MAKE CAPITALISM HISTORY - from front page

Socialist Resistance no26  |  page 2

This is scanned newsprint, not web text. The original PDFs carried no text layer at all, so every word here was read off the page by OCR. Expect dropped opening letters, run-together words and wrong characters. There was no contents page to cut the paper up by, so the articles were found from the size of their headlines: a headline may carry its kicker, and where an article ran beside a boxed panel a few lines of the neighbour can appear. The scanned issue is the authority; this text is here so the words can be found at all.

hortzons explain why as the anti-capitalist componont of the July 2 event has gathered strength, some of the local Make Poverty History organisations which originally made the call for a mass turnout have been cancelling coaches booked for the journey.

And even where transport has been arranged, It has meant that early calls for antlcapitalist campaigners to stay up In Edinburgh after the July 2 demonstration and participate In events, Including a countersummit, protests agalnst nuclear weapons, and a protest at Gieneagles on the Wednesday the G8 summit Is to be held, have been largely oclipsed.

The Live 8 Concert in Hyde Park and other cities around the world, promoted by Sir Bob Geldof, is a welcome addition to the week's events although It would have been better if It had not been timed to clash with the first Edinburgh march. But Geldof has called for a milllon people to march In Edinburgh.... on July 6, the date of the G8 summit Itself.

Soctalist Resistance wolcomes the mobllisation that is taking place, and the focus on the G8 which, Irrespective of the MPH organisers, will raise awareness of the polftical Issues among a new, wider layer of activists, many of them young peoplo.

We will be supporting the demonstrations on Jaly 2 and July 6, and the actions In between, and working to get the key message across: that poverty is as much a part of capitalism as extreme wealth

The system is one that exploits and oppresses the vast majority of the world's population to benefit the minority of ruling rich.

Brown, Blair, Bush and their G8 cronles all fully support this system: any serlous change has to begin with the nood to sweep It (and them) aslde and establish a now system based on meeting human need rather than the drive for profit.

Another, better world really is possible: but It wlli not be nodded through by a summit of G8 leaders, It must be fought for by working people, young and old, on the streets, in the workplaces and In the bullding of political partles which reject neoliberalism and offer a real political alternative.
