Achcar tour success

Socialist Resistance no26  |  page 6

This is scanned newsprint, not web text. The original PDFs carried no text layer at all, so every word here was read off the page by OCR. Expect dropped opening letters, run-together words and wrong characters. There was no contents page to cut the paper up by, so the articles were found from the size of their headlines: a headline may carry its kicker, and where an article ran beside a boxed panel a few lines of the neighbour can appear. The scanned issue is the authority; this text is here so the words can be found at all.

Soclalist Resistance public meetings can be a real success, as the recent mini-tour on The Middle East and the Project for the Now American Century demonstrates.

Lebanese soclalist Gilbert Achcar spoke at three forums In London, Oxford and BIrmingham to audiences old and now.

Questions and contributons from the audlences were wide and varled, from Ubya and what's going on In Syrla, to what really Is the "projact in the Middie East.

Many young people attended, mainly students, but some young workers wo'd worked with in Stop the War, Iraql Occupation Focus and Respect came to the meetings.

These were also the most multi-ractal meetings we have organised to date, which is a reflection of the lovel of agreement amongst activists, whether they describe themselves as soclalist or not, on køy Issues such as the connection between war, neoliberalism and racism.

Socialist Resistance will be organising more forums for debate in the coming months. It you would llke to set up a meeting In your area, omall us at the office, or give us a ring on 0208 800 7460.
