To the account of Patrick Scott No can realistically expect the BBC to be a bastion of political radicalism.
What we should at least be demanding though at the very least is a degree of honesty in reporting
In recent months it has become known that the BBC has been using material from journalists employed by the British Forces Broadcasting Services (BFBS), part of the Services Sound and Vision Corporation (SSVC).
At its website www.ssvc.com the SSVC decribes itself as a "charity set up to entertain and inform Britain's armed forces throughout the world"
Through the BFBS, the SSVC runs a number of radio stations and satellite TV stations for British armed forces.
But though a charity and therefore nominally independent the SSVC is funded by the Ministry of Defence (and he who pays the piper).

Many employed by the BFBS will be anything other than British government propaganda.
An example of such propaganda was a radio report from a BFBS reporter on BBC Radio on November.
The reporter who was assigned to work with the Scots Guards described the "constructive role" that members of the regiment had received in brokering a peace deal between two "warring" Iraqi tribes in an area near Basra, according the reporter the troops had to remain to keep the peace, a number of soldiers were interviewed but not a single Iraqi.
Reading between the lines the subtext to this piece of propaganda is simple enough.
Namely an unspoken but highly racist assumption that the Iraqis are warring barbarians and only the continued presence of US and British troops can prevent the contry from degenerating into civil war.

from impartial in its coverage of the general election. Craig Murray, the former ambassador to Uzbekistan has revealed that the BBC informed him why they were not covering his independent general election campaign against his former boss Jack Straw in Blackburn. Apparently the BBC was unable to assess if he had "significant electoral support". A career diplomat sacrificing a lucrative career in the Foreign Office for the sake of his conscience and then standing against his former boss in the general election is hardly an everyday occurence. It is a highly newsworthy story and Craig Murray's election campaign against Jack Straw received international coverage. But it was not newsworthy enough according to the BBC. It is highly likely that political pressure from above was brought to bear on the BBC in this instance and probably many others we may never know about.
