Joined by trade unions, anti-racist groups, black community organisations, women's associations, human rights and other organisations they raised the demands: "Freedom of movement and the right to stay".

In London a demonstration-cum-carnival followed a route from Clerkenwell Green through the East End past Communications House holding (detention) centre in Old Street to Haggerston Park for speeches, stalls and food.

In Manchester three feeder marches converged on the city centre for a rally in Albert Square on the theme "Detained, Deported, Disappeared - Hands Off Our Mates".

In Glasgow a demonstration took place outside offices of the Home Office in Brand Street.

Greece was the scene of migrant demonstrations in Thessalonika and Athens city centres as well as protests outside a detention centre for women and children near Athens.

Protesters in Rotterdam, Netherlands, demonstrated against the detention of sans papiers in two prison ships moored in the Merwe Port.

In Italy, action focused on two Italian "doors" to Europe: Ragusa detention centre in Sicily and Goriza in Friuli where a centre is under construction.

A special radio programme covered European initiatives in or around 2 April describ. ing them as "an EU map of rebellion against repressive and racist laws."
