The amended motion on press and publications, passed by a large majority with the support of the Respect Executive, contains an explicit commitment to launch a national publication before the next election.
It states: "Conference resolves to make the production of local news sheets a major priority wherever this is viable. Such news sheets could be delivered through letterboxes, handed out on stalls, and distributed within campaigns in which Respect supporters are active.
*This conference belleves that if Respect is to be built as a national organisation, then it needs to produce national publications and propaganda that will project a high profile and continuing political presence in every area, not just in areas where there are by-elections or General Election candidates.
"Conference therefore also instructs the new National Committee to take steps to ensure that Respect can produce a regular national newspaper for sale to members and the wider public in the run-up to the General election.
"Coupled with a more proactive Press Office, issuing regular statements and offering media comment, this publication could help ensure that Respect develops and deepens its alternative political programme and conveys this to the widest possible public throughout the country.
"Conference asks the National Committee to establish a working party to investigate the possibility of Respect producing a regular national monthly, fortnightly or weekly publication, including projections on likely costs and possible level of income from sales and other sources.
"This working party should report back to the National Committee within two months."
Socialist Resistance joint editor John Lister, who proposed the Oxford amendment, was among those elected to the new National Council.
