THIS WAR ISA FAILURE

Socialist Resistance no2  |  page 10

This is scanned newsprint, not web text. The original PDFs carried no text layer at all, so every word here was read off the page by OCR. Expect dropped opening letters, run-together words and wrong characters. There was no contents page to cut the paper up by, so the articles were found from the size of their headlines: a headline may carry its kicker, and where an article ran beside a boxed panel a few lines of the neighbour can appear. The scanned issue is the authority; this text is here so the words can be found at all.

Solidarity for Dear friends. and a further 22 people were placed under house arrest ed are trade unionists.

We have been informed that on the night of Friday 15th November, 20 members of the Italian social movement "No Global!" were arrested under Article 270 of the Italian Penal Code

This wave of repression against "leaders of the anti-globalisation movement" comes just after over 40,000 people took part in the successful European Social Forum in Florence and up to I million people marched totally peacefully against Blair, Bush and Berlusconi's war in Iraq. We understand that several of those arrestWe the members of the National Union of Rail, Maritime & cial trade union structures and relating directly with the movement, as it actually exists. In that, the shear breadth of experience on offer at the ESF was impressive.

Solidarity demands that we should give

It has already had results. Firstly by being able to participate in the Florence anti-war demonstration. But two weeks later by sending a delegation to Paris to continue the campaign against privatisation

November 26 saw up to 100,000 rail workers and others from the public sector marching through Paris against privatisation and in defence of social rights.

A dozen RMT members made the journey over to march with our colleagues from SUD Rail, alongside other delegations from Italy and the Spanish state.

Marching behind a "Renationalise the Railways" banner, flanked by French rail workers holding railway safety flares we were cheered the length of the march as French activists and ordinary Parisians alike recognised our message, that privatisation threatens rail safety.
