This is scanned newsprint, not web text. The original PDFs carried no text layer at all, so every word here was read off the page by OCR. Expect dropped opening letters, run-together words and wrong characters. There was no contents page to cut the paper up by, so the articles were found from the size of their headlines: a headline may carry its kicker, and where an article ran beside a boxed panel a few lines of the neighbour can appear. The scanned issue is the authority; this text is here so the words can be found at all.

The conference had been preceded by a series of debates in the local alliances, which had generally reflected the outcome of the conference. The decision places the SA in a position to piay a major roie in the event of a referendum in buiding a principled, working class opposition Euro counterposed to the Tory right.

about 37% of the vote. The CHP (a populist party founded by Ataturk and not recently experienced in government) came second and was the only other party to get over the 10% (of votes in each province) threshold - ironically enough put in place some time ago to prevent Kurdish parties from gaining representation in solid Kurdish areas in Kurdistan.

A few independents standing outside party structures were also elected. The parties which formed the last government (Ecevit's DSP, the far-right nationalist MHP and ANAP) and even Mrs Ciller's DYP were spectacularly consigned to the dustbin of history, achieving in all cases less than 10% and in some cases less than 3%, dismissed by voters who are angry and fed up with Turkish anti-war protestor grabbed by police: Turkey is key to the US war effort against Iraq • Winter 2002 19 weapon in the armoury required for "democratising" the Middle East. •No doubt as long as the new government complains "moderately" loudly, for public consumption, about not wanting a war with Iraq, but in practice lets the US and British use the air bases in. North West Kurdistan, the US will be happy.

Whether the widespread unpopularity of the war will lead to a strong antiwar movement remains to be seen.

Probably the AK victory does not much affect the prospects of whether the military will mount a big occupation of South Kurdistan (Northern Iraq) during the US war on Iraq, and seize the largely Kurdish cities of Mosul and Kerkuk which sit on a large part of the region's oil reserves.
