Two hundred steel workers at the new Wembley stadium site in west London were sacked on August 20, after their contracts were transferred from Darlington-based Cleveland Bridge to a new employerHollandia/Fast Track.
This followed a row between Cleveland Bridge and the main contractors on the site, Multiplex, which could jeopardise the schedule for completion of the 757m project - and therefore lead to penalties clauses for all the companies involved.
Members of Amicus and the GMB have been holding unofficial pickets since their sacking over a dispute about pay and conditions.
Pickets have brought work on the prestige site to a standstill. John Connor, a spokesman for the protestors said that Fast Track had gone back on their agreements.
The workers, many of whom are from the North East had previously had an agreement to be able to take long week ends to go home.
As one 52-year old worker said "All we wanted was to be able to go home every weekend being unreasonable. All we want to do is work." Natthe says 'no Lecturers at London Metropolitan University started the new academic year on Sept 1 burning their new contracts.
The university has been created after the merger of London Guildhall and North London University management have tried to impose common contracts - and obviously the least favourable -across both sites.
Natthe representative Amanda Sackur pointed out that the university wants to adopt a "bullies charter" which others might emulate. Vice Chancellor Brian Roper claims that no jobs will be lost and that the lecturers are living in "la-la land".
Sharing space with the teletubbies would undoubtedly be preferable to being managed by oats like him!
