Help Resistance make a splash at ESF 2004

Socialist Resistance no18  |  page 21

This is scanned newsprint, not web text. The original PDFs carried no text layer at all, so every word here was read off the page by OCR. Expect dropped opening letters, run-together words and wrong characters. There was no contents page to cut the paper up by, so the articles were found from the size of their headlines: a headline may carry its kicker, and where an article ran beside a boxed panel a few lines of the neighbour can appear. The scanned issue is the authority; this text is here so the words can be found at all.

Socialist Resistance wants to make a big splash at the European Social Forum. This will be one of the largest political gatherings in Britain for a very long time bringing together thousands of young people, trade unionists and single issue campaigners on many different issues.

For Socialist Resistance this will be an opportunity to introduce ourselves to hundreds and maybe thousands of people we don't normally meet, and who don't normally see the paper.

To do this we are doing three things

• We are organising a number of seminars. As we go to press the final decisions are being taken in Brussels about which meetings will actually happen, so we can't be completely sure about this, but see our website for the latest detalls

• We are organising a rally with Alain Krivine from

Please send

donations to us at

PO Box 1109

London N4 200 France, Frances Curran from Scotland, and Joao Machado from Brazil

• We are producing two issues of a newspaper together with the Ligue Communiste Revolutionaire in France - and this will be distributed free to participants

All of this is going to cost money - for air fares, hall booking, printing and publicity - which is outside our normal budget, at a time when we are

We are therefore launching an appeal to raise E3000 from our supporters by the end of the year. Put your cheques in the post now.

If you are already a supporter of socialist resistance, think of at least two other people you can ask- and contact them straight away rather than putting it off until tommorow.

If you are not already a supporter, think about becoming one, by making a regular donation, however small, as well as sending us a cheque for this special appeal.

Please think seriously about what you can afford.

If you can't afford it until pay day, then send us an email now to [email protected] letting us know how much you can send and when.

This is an opportunity which won't come round again for a long time. Let's make the best use of the chance we have.
