Shelia Malone A yad Alawi, America's choice for new prime
minister of Iraq, began his political life in the Baath Party - until he fell out with Saddam Hussein. He then helped form the CIA-funded exiles group, the Iraqi National Accord (INA)- where he fell out with Ahmed Chalabi. The INA, of course, was the 'single source' for bogus intelligence reports of nonexistent Iraqi weapons of mass destruction used to justify the US-led invasion.
Not surprisingly, this notorious stooge and liar scored an abject 0.2 per cent in a recent poll asking Iraqis which politicians they trusted most. (Even Saddam Hussein rated 3.3 percent!)
Nevertheless, Alawi has been richly rewarded by his American paymasters and given the top job in the socalled transfer of sovereignty on June 30. This bogus exercise is laid out in a new UN Security Council resolution, passed unanimously. Its real aim is to legitimise and consolidate the occupation. It also justifies, in retrospect, the war that brought about that occupation.
However these plans are being fiercely resisted by Iraqis, as was the war itself.
The USA invaded Iraq over a year ago to secure its dominance in the Middle East, including control over diminishing oil reserves. It combined the terror of massive superior fire-power ('shock and awe') with various deals to co-opt sections of the exiled and indigenous population.
From among these were to come the new elites with whom their paymasters and conquerors would do business, and jointly run 'the new rag'.
Be will never know the full extent of the carnage and destruction of the 'shock and awe assault on Baghdad. But the Americans had to pull back from the kind of total devastation the Russians, for instance, inflicted on Grozny in the war on Chechnya.
Anti-war movements at home and worldwide played a big part in causing this retreat from an initial Pentagon plan which foresaw up to 300,000 Iraqi dead.
But the other reason was the unexpected strength and resilience of the Iraqi resistance. This has now developed into a widespread and mixed opposition. There are nationalists, different religious groups, as well as trade unionists, the unemployed (unemployment is now 70 per cent), the dispossessed and the impoverished.
