We further added that the SSP should support the creation of a democratic, secular and socialist Palestine based on pre-1948

The Respect campaign is shaping up Almost all the candidates for the European elections have been selected. Strong lists have been adopted, which not only reflect a range of experience and political diversity but also the ethnic diversity of the constituencies themselves.
Respect will be standing in every Euro constituency in England, and all but one of the London Assembly constituencies, for the Please make cheques payable to RESISTANCE Name Address

London Mayor and for some selected local government seats. Local activities, including leafleting, stalls, fundraisers and film showings are being set up all over the country. In both political and practical terms the campaign is an awesome task in such a short period of time. The overall budget is in excess of £500,000. The 22 million election leaflets being ordered will cost about £350,000. An appeal is being launched for 100 people to pledge £1,000 and 1,000 people to pledge €100. There is also a big programme of SOCIALIST RESISTANCE is a monthly marxist paper. We are offering a special introductory subscription rate 1 year for £10 (UK), £15 (Europe) or £20 (other overseas). Age email fundraising events being planned and there is a campaign for 10,000 members by June. This would not only bring in money but make Respect the fourth largest party in England after the Lib Dems.
Election manifestos for both the Euro elections and the London Assembly elections are being drafted and discussed, and should soon be on the website.
It is already clear that Respect is attracting a significant number of activists Phone MR BLARE from the stop the war movement.
In the unions, too, the impact has been massive There is now a resolution on the agenda of the FBU conference in May, from the executive, calling for the democratisation of the union's political fund.
There are strong moves within the CWU to challenge the union's affiliation to the Labour Party. In the RMT several branches have already voted to support Respect and more will be discussing the issue over the coming weeks
There also remains strong pressure in the Communist Party of Britain to support Respect. Key members of its Executive have resigned in order to fight for an approach to Respect. The issue is once again due to go to a conference of the CPB
At the same time Respect has attempted to avoid clashes with other socialist and progressive candidates. It has decided, for example, not to stand in one of the London Assembly constituencies, Lewisham and Greenwich, standing down in favour of the Socialist Party, who will be standing Councillor lan Page as Socialist Alternative
In return the SP has agreed to support Respect in the Euro elections and for the Assembly in other parts of London.

The most difficult choice has been th decision to stand against the Green ME Caroline Lucas in the South East. She is th best of the Green MEPs, and could easily los her seat if Respect stands in the constituenc
Standing against her was not Respect's in tial wish - far from it. The problem aros when the Greens rejected Respect's offer a joint slate with Caroline Lucas at the top the list.
This would have given her the best poss ble chance of being re-elected. Instead th Greens took the deliberate decision th they would rather risk her losing her se than work with Respect.
Faced with this reaction, most members the constituency argued for Respect to star - particularly since the criteria for an electic broadcast is that a party must stand in ever constituency
The next couple of weeks will be decisi for the Respect campaign. Money has to b raised rapidly and campaign structures put place. Every supporter of Respect needs be mobilised. The future of the left England depends on the success of this can paign.
