This is scanned newsprint, not web text. The original PDFs carried no text layer at all, so every word here was read off the page by OCR. Expect dropped opening letters, run-together words and wrong characters. There was no contents page to cut the paper up by, so the articles were found from the size of their headlines: a headline may carry its kicker, and where an article ran beside a boxed panel a few lines of the neighbour can appear. The scanned issue is the authority; this text is here so the words can be found at all.

The management u-turn on teaching hours shows how vulnerable they are Already the students have won a small victory.

But the university still insist on pressing ahead with a merger of the Graphic Design, Fine Art and Digital Art courses, and renaming it "Digital Arts and Visual Communication". Students are dubbing it "MacFac", a meaningless degree designed to churn out as many students at as little cost in teaching time as possible.

Instead of students being trained in their chosen area, like Graphics, they will be allowed to take it as a 'pathway', yet what employer will want to take on someone without a proper degree?

Worse still, the current first years will be expected to graduate, not as Graphic Designers or Fine Artists, but as graduates of the new degree, a clear breach of contract

At no point have students been told that the university is to become a factory, not of knowledge, but of enslavement. Although details are thin on the ground, it is understood that the timetable for the proposed which is now being carried out across Europe and the rest of the world

Across France last year, students organised a national blockade of universities against the market agenda; the introduction of tuition fees, and the restructuring of the entire education system. Students from UEL gave solidarity to the French students. and sent a delegation to their student national co-ordination meeting.

Although they haven't won all their demands, they have won some, and their struggle continues. French student unions claim 100,000 students live below the poverty line. In Britain it must be even higher.

At UEL, a petition is being circulated with students planning lunchtime stalls to publicise the campaign, and an emergency general meeting of the students union is planned in the next few weeks to discuss further action.

Students can also take the fight outside the university to the City of London. We know from past experience, Seattle to Genoa, that protests terrify big business.

We don't just want to terrify big business we want to get them out of UEL
