Remembering Edward Said

Socialist Resistance no10  |  page 17-18

This is scanned newsprint, not web text. The original PDFs carried no text layer at all, so every word here was read off the page by OCR. Expect dropped opening letters, run-together words and wrong characters. There was no contents page to cut the paper up by, so the articles were found from the size of their headlines: a headline may carry its kicker, and where an article ran beside a boxed panel a few lines of the neighbour can appear. The scanned issue is the authority; this text is here so the words can be found at all.

But then that is hardly surprising.

John Negroponte, US ambassador to the UN, oversaw the political assassination of tens, perhaps hundreds, of thousands of workers and peasants throughout central America while US ambassador to Honduras. War criminal Negroponte has no problems lining up with his fellow war criminal Ariel Sharon.

For the United States the 'Road Map' basically meant that the Palestinians must kill one another in a bloody civil war - the consequences of any attempts to disarm the militant groups.

In the meantime Israel will remain armed to the teeth, will murder its opponents at will, will continue to seize Palestinian land and lock up anyone who dares to object However, once the Palestinians are sufficiently weakened then Israel may - or may not - make a few concessions.

This is no longer just the view of •the US. The recent meeting of the US, EU, UN and Russia put prime responsibility on the Palestinian leadership to crack down on militants How this is to be done without a bloody civil war and destroying the limited amount of democracy within the Palestinian Authority no-one llan Pappe W of Palestine..

who supported the Palestinian cause, have been orphaned with the untimely death of Edward Said. For Israeli Jews, like myself, he was the lighthouse that navigated us out of the darkness and confusion of growing up in a Zionist state onto a safer coast of reason, morality and consciousness.

...His insights of, and inputs on, the global reality in general and the Palestine one in particular will guide us all for many years to come.

... There is no one who could easily fill his place on that stage - no one who could in few sentences associate so clearly the wrongs of the past with the tragedy of the present in the land

He will be remembered, and justly so, for "Orientalism"... But I will also cherish the The Politics of Dispossession" - these short and lucid interventions, quite often immediate reactions to a recent crisis or juncture in the life of Palestine and the Palestinians, but always contextualizing... within the much broader view on the march of history...

In his memory and out of respect to Edward Said: 1935-2003 his intellectual genius as well as to his moral courage, we should regroup our energies and reorganize our efforts to impress on the world that there will be no justice and no peace in Palestine, no stability in the Middle East and no tranquillity in the US relationship with the Muslim world, without the return of Palestinian refugees to their home, the end of the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip and the building of a state in Palestine that would respect human and civil rights, as did Edward all his life. (This is an edited version of a tribute by Israeli activist and academic lan Pappe).

were abandoned on September 14 without agreement, to the joy of many delegates from poorer countries, NGO representatives and demonstrators from Mexico and all over the world, and much to the annoyance of the United States and European Union negotiators in particular. The failure at Cancún is to be welcomed as the biggest defeat for US and EU-based multinationals and their state sponsors since Seattle in 1999.

While many other factors were involved, this year's mobilisations against the WTO agenda across the world and in Cancún itself, and those against the war on lraq played a decisive role in slowing if not stopping the big business juggernaut. ce October 2003
