An interview with Fred Halliday, recorded in Chicago in November 2005, in which he breaks publicly with the politics of the journal he helped edit. Halliday sat on the New Left Review editorial committee from 1968 until he resigned in 1983, and here tells Danny Postel that he no longer shares its major political orientations. The quarrel is over the Middle East and over anti-imperialism: he objects to the way his former comrades — Tariq Ali above all, whose standing had risen sharply after 11 September — understand responsibility for the region's wars and the forces contending in them. marxsite carried it as the other side of an argument, linking the original rather than endorsing it.
