Brazil police violently crackdown on nationwide protests

2013-06-17  ·  first published in marxsite  ·  126 words

This was not a Socialist Resistance publication. marxsite was Phil Hearse’s own long-form site, run alongside the paper he helped edit. It is kept here with his agreement, recovered from the Internet Archive after the domain lapsed and was taken over by someone else; nothing here links to the address it now points at.
Only a fragment of this survives. It may have been a short link-and-comment post, which marxsite ran many of, or the opening of a longer piece cut off by the capture — from what remains there is no way to tell which.

For the better part of the past two weeks, Brazilians have taken to the streets to display their discontent and despair over a host of social, economic and political ills. It all started in the nation's two largest cities, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, where residents angry about a 10-cent bus and subway fare increase turned out in the thousands to voice their indignation. The Rio Times reports that 20,000 people demonstrated in São Paulo and as many as 10,000 took to Rio's streets for Thursday's protests.
