Thousands Protest In Palestinian Solidarity

This was not a Socialist Resistance publication. marxsite was Phil Hearse’s own long-form site, run alongside the paper he helped edit. It is kept here with his agreement, recovered from the Internet Archive after the domain lapsed and was taken over by someone else; nothing here links to the address it now points at.
Only part of this piece survives. The capture it was recovered from is truncated, so the text below stops before the article did.

Thousands of people took to central London yesterday (24 November) in solidarity with Palestinians in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza.

Protestors walked from Downing Street to the Israeli Embassy.

Eddy Clarke, a member of the Palestinian Solidarity Group, came from Bristol for the protest. He was holding a banner over 6ft wide, reading ‘you can hide from us but not your conscience’ (pictured above). Eddy told Impact that the banner “is to tell people that you can’t look away from [the violence in the region], looking away from it is complicit in the crime. Its also a crime not to find out the truth”

Professor Mica Nava from the University of East London was one of a significant number of Jewish people demonstrating in solidarity with the Palestinians. She told Impact that there is “substantial left-wing insight” into the conflict.

There was a police presence, however it was minimal. The protest was peaceful.

At the end of the march demonstrators were met by speakers, such as Tony Benn, who called for continued solidarity with those affected in the region.

Despite a ceasefire between Hamas and Israeli military forces, demonstrators were trying to emphasise the need for change in the region, with the recent outbreak of violence as symptomatic of a wider problem.

The Nottingham Palestinian solidarity group has continued its presence in Market Square .
