Egypt: "Today we are witnessing the same political and police repression of the pre-revolution"

This was not a Socialist Resistance publication. marxsite was Phil Hearse’s own long-form site, run alongside the paper he helped edit. It is kept here with his agreement, recovered from the Internet Archive after the domain lapsed and was taken over by someone else; nothing here links to the address it now points at.

Heba Nasreddine - The recent report of Al-Nadim Centre for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Violence and Torture reported 247 cases of police torture during the first 100 days of office of Morsi? What is your opinion?

The report of Al-Nadim Centre is not the only one who reveals these transgressions.Several other national and international human rights have published similar reports, including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International. We, the National Council for Human Rights (NCHR), have dealt with the same subject, and we have presented in detail 14 cases of torture in police centers and prisons in September 2012, where a person has died.

Police continue to consider themselves above the law, despite the statements of the new Minister of the Interior "to safeguard the rights of citizens." In addition, no official action was taken following the publication of these figures. If the officers responsible for brutalizing do not appear in court, there will be no hope that the victims get their rights, and officers do not fear punishment if they engage once again in such acts.
