So the Con-Dems have won the first battle in the war, but at the expense of the unity and credibility of the Tories' coalition partners. It's tempting to call this the strange death of Liberal England, mark two, after the title of a book by Graham Dangerfield published in 1935. But the idea central to liberalism, that there can be a progressive side to capitalism, will continue to raise its head, unless we can build an anti-capitalist political alternative. What did for the early 20th century Liberal Party, according to Dangerfield, was the rise of Labour, the Irish national struggle and the suffragettes. Now Labour is part of the problem, with Miliband even refusing to commit Labour to undoing the Con-Dem tuition fee rises. One part of our answer to the Commons vote on fees must be to keep building the anti-cuts and anti-fees campaigns locally and nationally, to defend those arrested, to start putting pressure on Tory as well as Lib Dem MPs, and on Labour councils implementing the cuts. But across the country we also have to start confronting the question of standing anti-cuts candidates in the local elections, on behalf of the millions opposing the cuts who are currently represented by no major party. The first Liberal Party was a tragedy. Its second incarnation is a farce. Let there not be a third.
