A free fun packed day for all the family combining live music, poetry, comedy, educational talks, an exhibition, arts project, puppet show, beer tent, food, book and other stalls. Over 25 live acts, two choirs and a historical digging re-enactment.
The now annual event, commemorates Wigan born Gerrard Winstanley (1609-1676) and the 17th Century "Diggers" (True Leveller) movement. Winstanley and they famously asserted: “The Earth was made a common treasury for all, irrespective of person!”, and are described by Tony Benn as the "first true Socialists".
The last three festivals have all been a resounding success and over 2,000 people attended the last two events. We hope this year's will be too. Labour MP John McDonnell will officially open this year's proceedings.
