The events over the last week show and epitomise the extraordinary political climate we currently live in. Right-wing conservatism is now so unpopular in the UK that Theresa May has to rely not only on conservative votes in Scotland, but is needing to look to even more dangerous and reactionary partners in the form of the DUP. With calls growing from within her own party for May to step down, this is a Tory party in chaos and a British establishment in disarray, with no coherent thought or strategy for the ordinary people at time of massive economic inequality.
In response to this, the election has highlighted the appetite and urgent need for bold transformative politics. The radical left-wing vision for independence that we saw in 2014 was capable of galvanising the previously disengaged, gave hope to us all and looked to give back power to forgotten communities across Scotland. Labour's manifesto and campaign also instilled these same feelings of engagement, hope and a chance to be heard. Corbyn himself faced down the same media vitriol that was thrown at the Yes campaign, and much like the Yes campaign he came from nowhere to the cusp of victory. Learning from both the Independence campaign and the most recent general election, we must never again allow grassroots campaigners to feel disengaged and lose that hope.
We cannot easily dismiss either the question of Independence nor the transformative policies of Corbyn's manifesto. What we can do is to continue to bring together those who voted and believe in both independence and socialism. By sharing policies and ideas that bridge this apparent divide, we should look to provide the actions that binds both together and continue to work closer with friends who share much of the same vision and idea's as ourselves.
Unfortunately not one of the major parties in Scotland can provide the space needed to debate all the issues that matter to pro-independence socialists, nor do they have the political position to positively act on both simultaneously. We must not only provide the space for these issue's to be discussed, but be humble enough to work with those across the left to achieve that transformative change that our communities are crying out for.
We believe that true power for transformative change will always lie with ordinary people, in our communities, in our workplaces and on the streets. By empowering and helping to upskill our communities in the tactics, tools and strategy to fight. We will be building the foundations in which true power can be built.
This National Assembly of RISE members will set out our vision and goal for the coming months and years, give us targets and deadlines to aim for. Give focus for campaigning and education and ultimately start equipping our members with the structure and tools needed to defeat Tory capital and crushing economic lunacy.
