Politics after the Referendum

The independence movement lost the vote but won the campaign. Better Together won comfortably, but only because it had the whole of the establishment behind it and then had to make last minute concessions for devolution. The day after the vote, Cameron qualified these by making them conditional on changes in England. Rarely have promises been reneged upon so quickly. Despite saving the "union", the three main Westminster parties have been thrown into crisis. Meanwhile the engagement with politics by millions in Scotland has benefited the pro-indepence parties. The SNP recruited over 17,000, the Greens 2,000 and over 1,000 joined the Scottish Socialist Party.

Can the left in the rest of the UK be re-energised by the fight in Scotland for democracy, and social and economic justice? How can the main Westminster parties survive? Can the move for ever greater devolution be stopped? And what does it mean for elsewhere in Europe like Catalonia? These and other questions will be debated at the Socialist Resistance meeting Monday 29 September, 7:30pm, at the Marchmont Street Community Centre.
